It seems everybody enjoyed the lesson on plurals
last week. This week I will go over some commonly used
abbreviations with you.
EKG – electrocardiogram
CVA – cardiovascular accident, cerebrovascular accident,
costovertebral angle
GI – gastrointestinal
MRI – magnetic resonance imaging
CAT – computer axial tomography
CABG – coronary artery bypass
(pronounced cabbage..don’t type that!)
CVD – cardiovascular disease
Ig – immunoglobulin
IG – immune globulin intragastric
IgA – gamma A immunoglobulin
IgD – gamma D immunoglobulin
IgM – gamma M immunoglobulin
bid, b.i.d. or BID – twice a day
tid, - three times a day
q – every
po – by mouth
For example, if a patient is given Levaquin 500 mg to be
taken once a day, you would type:
Levaquin 500 mg po qd.
If the patient was prescribed a medication to be taken four times per day, you would type the milligrams and then qid, or po qid.
